The Selfish Seamstress is officially unemployed. Surprisingly, this is not because she was dismissed on account of her attitude problem and inability to get along with others. No, nerdy little Selfish decided to change universities, abandon the igloo in which she currently lives, and head back to Europe where she can alienate and irritate a whole new set of academics. She is now in between the two jobs and in the stressful throes of culling and organizing, neither of which she is any good at. Selfish’s delightful mancessory Dan also has found exciting employment in their soon-to-be place of residence as well, and Sasa is blissfully unaware that she will be shoved into a bag and transported within the next few weeks.
As you can imagine, sewing time is going to slow to a drip, if not disappear altogether for a while. At the moment I’m working on what I’m referring to as “The Last Dress… for Now.” Made from the graphic print black and white ponte di roma that my parents hauled up to me last week using a very modified version of the Simplicity 9482 wrap dress (probably out of print, as I’ve had this pattern for about 7 years and it’s kind of not that great). Here it is in its half-finished state, looking a bit sad and droopy on its hanger:
I was going to use my beloved modified Vogue 8379 pattern, but after playing around with the fabric, I decided that the double pleats in the the Vogue bodice would detract from the strong, straight, diagonal elements of the print. I really wanted to minimize the details to keep the print as uninterrupted as possible. So I dug out the old Simplicity pattern, which is so minimalist it’s practically a bathrobe pattern. Although I graded it down to a 4, the dress has some largeness issues at the moment that have to be fixed. But other than that, I think it’s working out decently well and I’m pretty sure that this is the dress that this print was destined for.
After The Last Dress… for Now though, my plan is to not start any new projects until after the move. If I do have sewing time, I’ll finish up stuff that I started a while ago and never completed. (That’s the plan at least. But you never know with the capricious Selfish Seamstress. She could at any point decide that she needs a new coat RIGHT NOW.)
Even after the move, it will take a while before my machine, patterns, stash, tools, and notions arrive in Europe. That leaves me with the small matter of what to do in the meantime with the online bucket of whining that I call a blog during the coming hectic and sewing-impoverished weeks (possibly months). What do you think? Go on a blogging hiatus? Switch to being a knitting and crochet blog for the time being? Rant about all things sewing-related without actually sewing? All haiku all the time? Get by on hand sewing? I feel like I should keep it up in some fashion, especially since I don’t have any Real Life friends so you’re the closest thing that I’ve got. So, what do you want to read? No promises, of course ;)

I’m guessing Deutschland since both you and Dan have frequented there quite a bit in the last year.
As mentioned earlier, I’ll be in Bremen and Berlin as well as the German alps from October 15th to the 30th if you want to meet and shop at fabric stores? I could really use someone with taste when choosing fabric because I have none of my own!

Ooh! I actually haven’t been to Germany since 2008, nor has Dan. Well, I guess we’ve been through the Frankfurt airport a couple of times though. And since the airport has Burda, it’s certainly worth it :)
Drop me an email if you know your travel plans and maybe we can figure something out. I’m not sure how feasible it will be to meet up (it would take some traveling on my part) but it would be fun to try :) And fabric shopping in Berlin would be divine, I bet!

Oh I feel for you.
Since moving to Germany my beloved Husqvarna is sitting in the back of my daughter’s car in San Diego. It is heartbreaking to make do with a 99 euro Singer purchased on-line!
I’d given up sewing since working in a research lab took up so much time. I’d packed for the move in a hurry and left my sewing stuff behind since I didn’t think about taking sewing up again. Sigh – such foolishness.
Yarn arts sound like the best solution for now. Have fun!

Oh, I know what you mean. I’m taking the Husqvarna with me and getting a transformer for it. When I lived in Germany, I had a 50 Euro machine that I purchased at the grocery store! It remains to be seen how much time my new position will afford for hobbies, but I get the feeling that if I left my machine behind I would regret it in any case. I hope you get yours back someday!

If you move to Germany could you please, please, please post about German fabric stores?

Can I second this request? If you could do a special feature on Munich that would be even better.
Of course congratulations to the Selfish Seamstress, I do hope you selfishly demanded a whopping payrise and find somewhere to live with plenty of selfish sewing space.

Well, we all know that I am your best friend. lol
This all sounds very exciting. I think you should keep posting, of course. We all need a little bit of selfish in our daily lives. Just post about whatever is going on at the time, a little bit of everything, the packing, the move, photos of the new city, knitting, haikus. I think variety will keep it interesting.
Oh, and I love the dress.

I would love it if you were able to continue to Blog about knitting, the direction of fashion, patterns, fabrics, your best sewing tips, dream sewing, shortcuts to take and anything else. How will I enjoy my morning coffee without your blog to read? Much happiness to you both as you go forth on your new adventure!

First off, congratulations on your FUNemployment! Between jobs is kind of fun when you look at it the right way! What an exciting new adventure!
I’ll miss you like crazy, but I totally get that moving, while exciting, is stressful and it’ll take some time for you to settle down, settle in and get back in the groove again. Or not. Knowing you, you’ll just HAVE to sew something to show us all that you can do it ALL.
If you must blog in the actual sewing downtime, I’d love to hear your thoughts on current fashion, how European fashion trends are different from those here in N.America and some fun haikus. They always make me giggle.
Enjoy Europe! :)

Congratulations! I’m sad, though, because when you get to Europe you will be making gorgeous things from patterns that I cannot get (and I am not only selfish but also CHEAP, so I hate paying for shipping). In the meantime, tell us haikus, tell us about European fashion, and whine about a whole new set of people asking you to make curtains for them! I’m looking forward to some hilarious Selfish Smackdowns.

How exciting for the Selfish Seamstress, since you *do* live in an igloo right now, and Europe is pretty awesome. (A friend lived in Amsterdam, and they’d go all over for weekends, and make me incredibly jealous.) But poor little Sasa, the journey is going to make her so cranky.

I love your opinions on new patterns, particularly the crazy Burda patterns. They have me laughing every time. I wish Burda was a weekly publication just so I could read more of them. Posts on fashion would probably amuse me the same way.
A nemisis post would also pass the non-sewing time quite well.

Nooo, you can’t selfishly deny us your snark for the next several months. I’d enjoy reading just about any subject you choose to blog on. Of course, you could also make Swallowtail Shawls for all your cyberfriends, too … just sayin’ ;-)

I say all of the above. Write about whatever your little selfish heart desires! but do please write. Oh, and congratulations on both your jobs.
And how *do* you move-possibly from a North American country- to a European country with a cat? I assume it’s not like going to the UK, with a lengthy (and Sasa *never* forgiving you) quarantine.
August 25, 2010 at 10:04 am
Misty
Congrats on your new position, and congrats to Dan on his new position as well! What a fun time for both of you. Maybe not for Sasa. I’d love to hear what she thinks of the move, and how it goes from your end. My husband and I and our cat, Cal, just moved from California to Georgia. Cal did not enjoy the four day drive, and she hid for several days when we arrived because she was afraid of the ceiling fans in our new place.
I hope you keep posting, and I hope you have time to work on something (knitting or even hand sewing) in the interim. I’m in the middle of the first week of classes here as a new Science Professor, and longing for that day in the future when I will have the time and energy to knit again and eventually start learning to sew. Also looking forward to having my kitchen unpacked so we can stop eating out. And stop tripping over boxes…

Congrats on the big move! Moving in country is a big hassle I cannot imagine moving to another continent.
Blog about anything; the weather, your lack of affection, Sasa… even Cathy! Look; the truth is we – especially for those who lack the ability to be a bitchy as you are – look forward to the attitudes and clowning that presents itself in an extra petite package that calls Dan arm candy.

WELCOME TO EUROPE! Welcome to the land of newstands bursting with cheap Burda mags and Vogue only by mail with huge shipping costs thrown in! Well, while you’re moving, you mustn’t stop blogging, but spread the Selfishness all around. Howbout a street style blog as you land…why they dress so bad here and here? Or howbout a cranky review of some more nemeses who are getting a head start on the autumn fashions while you fart around with changing all your plugs and voltages and cooking utensils to from ounces to grams and milligrams? Howbout some really offensive posts on how superior you now feel joining the sophisticated Continentals and leaving behind the suburban drab of Simplicity USA?
But you can’t stop blogging! You’re taught us all so well how to be fabulously Selfish!

What they said! Surely you will acquire new sewing patterns/magazines even while your machine/stash/notions are in transit, so I expect some snarky/gloating posts about the good, the bad, and the clownishly ugly. I do hope you will continue to blog about anything that inspires you to the scornful commentary we’ve come to expect.
Wishing you and Dan all kinds of fabulosity in your new job/home.

If you weren’t so selfish you would be offering your stash up for grabs since you will be able to access all that European fabric as well as pattern magazines. Consider the cost of shipping Selfish, surely that should weigh in. You would really be doing YOURSELF a favor and we know how you love to do things for yourself! You absolutely need to keep blogging or you will be your only fan, and what would SS do without publuc adoration.
Best of luck with your move, and I will continue to check in.

Last time I moved to Europe, I took advantage of the opportunity (change in power settings! yeah!) to get an upgrade in sewing machines :-). So you may not be fabric-helpless as long as you think. I got mine at Cooper’s in London, excellent service and quick shipping. http://www.sewingmachinediscount.co.uk/
Ahem. That said, you probably ought to whip out some woolies if you’re doing anything at all. This summer has been very cool since to the Icelandic eruption, and we may break cold records next winter..

What if we don’t have the continual reminders to be selfish? ! What if we all start hemming and repairing WILLY NILLY for everyone that asks?! I do need to catch up on past postings but I’m not sure that will keep my heart cold and hard enough against the “Askers”.

Well duh, start a fight or two around the sewing/blogging world. Remember when MTV used to do celebrity death match (maybe they still do)? You could start instigating a sewing version. Patterns, fabrics, bloggers, just think of all the potential destruction you could leave in your wake before you flee to another continent!

Oh, I hope you don’t take a long blogging break–yours is one of my favorite sewing blogs to read, and I’d miss my semi-daily dose of selfishness!
I’d say blog about whatever you want, though I hope there is some sewing talk thrown in amidst the piles of yarncrafts. Especially the haikus. And rants about sewing while not doing any sound pretty entertaining.
Congrats to both of you on the new jobs!

1. Packing

Congrats on your new job!! I like moving, do you? Well, I would like to see how you finish your unfinished stuff. That might be encouraging to see someone who actually really does it. And if you are happening to move to Hamburg… But the best fabric store ever is in Berlin (a business to business store with everything and cheap prices – HÜCO), crazy opening hours, though.

Congratulations on your new job! Haikus, yes, knitting, yes. Maybe you could also publish “inspirational posts”? I’m sure you’ll be getting lots of ideas on what to do with your sewing machine when you get it back. Tell us! And reviews: it’ll be easier to get you hands on Burda but also Patrones and La Mia Boutique.
Now for the fabric shopping, I live in Hamburg and love Mahlers and Gädtke. I published some posts about my fabric shopping in Berlin and Basel, if you’re moving to anyone of those places…

Oh dont stop posting!!! anything will do (oh defo european fashion…) also if you move to a colder country do fashon – nspirations for us freezing our booties off here in northern europe (of course totally selfish for yourself ;) )
And im glad we re getting a little more selfishness here over the water. i could definately do with a stronger feeling of the force from time to time!
and if you are ever on the fair isle of ireland make sure to be in touch! (no fabric shops to write home about though im afraid :( )
if you do go to germany at some stage try out the alfatex shops (there are a few around the country) they are the best shops ive seen there (especially the one in cologne)

Fellow Europeans, let’s not get overexcited! I’ll admit, thats what I thought at first as well – yay, she’ll start blogging about online sewing supplies much closer to the fabric-barren place that is my (Austrian) hometown.
But then I got thinking: with Selfish on the continent, will there be any fabric left for ME??? (and what about vintage patterns? cute shoes my size?)

If you end up in Germany (or somewhere near the German border), you have to check this out: http://www.stoffmarktholland.de . It’s fabric paradise! All the best for the move and a really good start in good old Europe!

As a co-academic I realy look forward to you bringing some new energy to this continent! Looking forward to your blog about this new fase!
Eventhough these first lines already hint on what my answer’s gonna be to your question, still here it is ” sayin’ it out loud…”:
Please keep blogging! I love to read about your life. And what about using this transition period for a true selfish project: write your very own ‘Memoires of a Selfish Seamstress’ ! You know…about how it all began, which outfits you’ve made also bear special memories to you (maybe because of the process of constructing, maybe because you’ve met Dan the first time when you wore that beautiful dress). Your first childhood memories when you already showed this genius talent for style & fashion and started to dress your fellow kindergarden classmates? Surely you must know by now that writing your memoires is a ‘must’ when you are…well…YOU!
So I hope by now, that after reading my comment, you will feel encouraged to please keep on blogging. Can’t help it but your blogs are very addictive!
Lots of succes & hugs for you and Dan and all the best!
Already a warm welcome from this side of the puddle!
Greetz,
N

Congrats on the new job! And good luck with the move. Blogwise, I say write whatever you feel like writing whenever the mood strikes you to write it. I’m sure I’ll be just one of many checking regularly for updates from the vaunted Selfish Seamstress. Oh, and saw Ann of Gorgeous Fabrics’ mention of your article in Vogue Patterns. Congrats on that as well.
Hmm. Marrying a hunk, new job in Europe, recently published…looks like that selfish lifestyle is working really well for you!
Hugs.

I am sure you will find plenty to keep us entertained! Good luck with the move. Moving is dreadful but soon you will be in a glamourous new undisclosed location!

Ugh. Dance classes, these *parents* people, and now schlepping everything you own abroad??? What about ME? What about MY needs?

Please continue blogging. I know you will find tons of things to post about you are so creative. And what about taking a new hobby like embroidering while waiting for your things to arrive?
Jimena who in the past had the courage to label you as a winter person, haha

I think it’s time for Europe to get a little Selfish. Well, at least its time for it to meet it’s match! (Imagine your selfishness being equal to that of an entire continent!)
Congratulations on the new gig!

Congrats on the new jobs for both you and Dan! My boyfriend and I want to move to Europe somewhere too. I’m looking into some teaching positions/programs.
Anyways, I would love to see any knitting or that you do! Good luck with the move and packing!

If you’re moving to London, then I’ve got some fightin’ words for you… TURF WAR! (It’s exactly like those gang fights in West Side Story, but with less flick knives and more seam rippers.)

Congrats!
Pleeeeease be selfish and show us your knitting and crochet and rant about all the smaller and bigger obstacles connected to selfish moving! And don’t forget to pack sewing supplys with your sewing mashine. Zippers, buttons &co. are really expensive on this side of the atlantics. (We are talking about 12€/15$ for a 60cm two ways zip!!!)
So welcome to europe :)

Just skip the sewing and keep the attitude coming. European fabric stores, street fashion…lots of new opportunities for you to find fault and point it out to us! As someone who wants to move to Europe in 2014, I would appreciate learning about cool places and people! Best wishes and safe travels!
