No doubt we’ve seen some pretty weird fabric out there. And if you spend most of your waking hours trolling the internet for fabric, as the Selfish Seamstress does, pretty much no fabric subject matter surprises you anymore. If something exists, it’s been printed on fabric.
But yesterday I discovered what I believe is the weirdest fabric I’ve seen on the internet, not because of the print, goofy but not completely out there, but because of particular combination of print, fiber, and weave. Are you ready for it?
It’s SOUTH PARK PRINT 100% SILK CHIFFON.
Oh yeah. It’s 100% filmy, diaphanous silk chiffon, so it’s perfect for a lovely frock for a garden party, wedding, or a trip to the Oscars, but it’s also got a whimsical all-over South Park print, which makes it just right for a 14-year old boy in the year 1998. Let’s take a closer look, ok?
Awesome. You can get it here, btw. How about you? Seen any other super wacky fabrics or incongruous print/fabric combos lately? Anyone keen on making a filmy little South Park number now?

That’s hysterical. If it was quilting cotton or something it would make more sense- but silk chiffon???

Reminds me of the time I saw Mormom scrapbooking stickers. I understand there are a lot of Mormons but I thought it was a pretty specific craft item.
I would love to see a celeb wear this South Park fabric on the red carpet.
Brilliant!

Large scale prints + Petite frame = Not pretty. So, I won’t be buying this, even though the shock value would be awesome. It would be interesting to see what someone made with it though.

Wacky, you’ve got to wonder what the people who got the instructions on printing this thought when they received the order!

Perhaps this is the logical conclusion of all the complaining we do along the lines of…”quilting cotton comes in nice patterns but that it’s a shame the material isn’t suitable for dressmaking” And then BOOM, horrific quilting pattern (which I don’t think is what anyone meant) on silk chiffon.
It’s so awful, that I can’t even bring myself to dare you to make something nice with it.

You know it doesn’t look like a cheap fabric at all. The print actually looks well lain out not just a hodge podge of characters pasted together, instead there are alternating rows of larger and smaller figures. And the scale of the print is larger than a quilting cotton. Whatever this is it seems it was designed as a garment fabric.

I’m hoping to see Katy Perry in a dress made out of it some time very soon.

That would be a brilliant lining for a sedate, black evening or cocktail dress. If I had need for a black cocktail dress I’d be buying some of that fabric right now – just as lining.

Considering that the creators really disliked the merchandise that was being licensed for the series I wonder if this fabric is officially-licensed . . . ? (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Towelie#cite_note-1)

I remember seeing a designer’s collection featuring South Park characters. Here is a photo of the dress that fabric was intended for, it’s $434. Ick, reminds me of the Steve Buscemi dress (shudder): http://www.fashionweekdaily.com/chic-report/article/jcdc-visits-south-park

Wow, WTF is right. It really is more about the fibre and print than one or the other. In a cotton, I wouldn’t question it, my mom would turn it into luggage tags that I’m sure would sell well. Even a cheaper poly blend fabric could be fun, but silk chiffon?

I know the link to the dress was posted earlier but the designer did a whole line out of South Park.

So sorry to ruin the party but I’d totally buy that fabric. Too bad it is just too much of a hassle to buy from E-bay in my country. I used to LOVE South Park. I would make a cute blousy top with pussy bows and wear it with high heels and a fitted pencil skirt!! I’d wear it everywhere possible unitl it wore out too.

I so totally wish I had the skill to work with silk. My little brother, God love him, loved South Park. I would so love to make something dreadful, like a silk hoodie or something, with it. He would’ve found that hillarious.

Ooh, I have this exact fabric! It’s gorgeous! I used for an infinity scarf and I get so many complements on it. I would love to get some more and try to make a lovely skirt or swishy top with it.
