As if things couldn’t get busier here in Selfish Land, the Selfish Seamstress’s parents arrived in town last night for a weeklong visit. For those who have been keeping track, that means that both Mommy Selfish and Daddy Selfish are in town, as well as the future Selfish Mother-in-Law, and the future Selfish Father-in-Law. This is a lot of parents all at once. And not a lot of sewing time.
You may be wondering what sort of horrible selfish people must have to join forces in order to spawn something as wickedly selfish as the Selfish Seamstress. Surely many have asked, “What must her parents be like??” Well, it may surprise you to know that the Selfish Seamstress’s parents are actually remarkably generous and unselfish people. This allows them to be more easily taken advantage of by their selfish daughter. (From a genetic standpoint, it seems likely that there was some sort of selfish mutation that led to me being the way I am, as my sisters were raised in the same environment and failed to manifest or develop any particularly selfish traits.)
Case in point, they very kindly lugged a whole suitcase full of fabric on their trip. Not the little roll-aboard kind either, but a bona fide suitcase, almost large enough to fit Selfish herself. Obviously you are not interested in the suitcase, but its contents:
Now, lest you think that my parents are actually so generous as to BUY a suitcase’s worth of fabric for me, I should state that I selected and paid for these items myself. I simply had them shipped to my parents’ house because it is cheaper to do so and I figured I could sucker them into transporting them for me. Evil plan successfully executed. And yes, before you doubt me, the Selfish Seamstress could probably have suckered her Unselfish Parents into buying her a ton of fabric, but she trusts no one’s taste but her own. And so she raided some recent fabulous sales at Fabric Mart and Fabric.com.
Top row from right to left: 50/50 wool silk blend flannel suiting in black with a faint gray woven pinstripe; super lightweight gray tropical weight wool with a faint stripe, heathered brown tropical weight wool with a brushed finish, smooth and drapey cool brown tropical weight suiting, charcoal gray tropical suiting with a twill weave
Middle row from left to right: Rich teal wool coating (actually from The Wool Connection), deep inky blue stretch denim slightly streaky, dark gray stretch denim
Bottom row from left to right: black and white graphic print ponte di roma (this claims to be nylon, but it feels more like a poly-rayon. It’s not the nicest texture, but I fell for the print, and at $1.95 a yard, it seemed to be asking for a trip in my shopping cart), silver gray swimwear fabric (this one is wooow really shiny. Not a foil, thank goodness, but so much more reflective than I expected.)
And for all you fabric pr0n lovers, here are so close ups, color adjusted for better accuracy:
Oh, yeah, and they also brought me shoes.

Not really….As much as I enjoy good fabric pr0n I prefer a good shoe-gasm any day. I’m kinda happy that in my petiteness I was given size 7 feet as opposed to my mom’s 5.5 – 6
And they are cute….only size 10 left though. Oh Beanie where art though?

Lucky you! Although you have made some beautiful items recently for mom, perhaps something new will be in store for her? Shoes!!! Now, you’re talking! You and I happen to have the same size feet… size 5..and I know how difficult it can be to purchase stylish shoes in this size and still have $$$ leftover for fabric! Enjoy the visits..are these wedding related?

Nope, just summer visits. As for the wedding, after I realized that it takes more than 2 or 3 hours to plan one, I grew rather bored and went back to sewing. I’m hoping that if I just keep putting it off, Dan will eventually plan the whole thing himself and all I have to do is show up and get a free ring out of it.
Woot! Size 5 ladies, unite! And if you’re fortunate enough to live near a Nordstrom Rack, that’s definitely the place to be for great deals for petite feet.

Awesome! I too have suckered my parents into buying and carrying many suitcases of fabric back for me. It works really well.

ha! I just ordered my second lot of fabrics from Fabric.com for my parents to lug over in their suitcases next month. My mom just informed me I’ve got 21 pounds of fabric there now, ha! But the way I see it, my brother, sister-in-law and the kids don’t have any fabric in their luggage yet, so I can still shop. I mean, kids clothes don’t take up much room…

Yum. I got some of the tropical wool from fabric.com too— a gray/blue houndstooth for yet another jacket I don’t have time to make :) Thought about getting more but resisted because I wasn’t sure about the colors. Which ones did you order?

Hmm. I’m hiding in the mountains far from stash and machine at the moment, so I can’t tell you, but I’ll let you know when I’m back. I’m pretty sure one of them had “Madison” in the name :)

Please email me if your parents would like to adopt a 2nd selfish seamstress! Love your fabrics and, of course, I am coveting them.

Great fabric and super cute shoes. Another size 5 shoe wearer here (can get away with 5.5 sometimes).

Perhaps the selfishness gene is recessive? A bit like being Rhesus negative: your parents may both carry the gene, but not exhibit its characteristics, with it being smothered by a dominant gene for niceness. That would also explain why, in the genetic lottery, your siblings are also deficient in selfishness. Pretty good outcome for you, though. Having more than one selfish in a family would be quite competitive, but with only one, hey, they are all your devoted slaves!!!

The (red!!!) shoes (with the bow!!!) got me even more than the loads of fabulous fabric. Shame on me.

Well bless your selfish little heart. You SHARED some really drool worth swag there.
I would love, love, love to see a picture the M&D units and the M&D inlaws-to-be. A family portrait?
That would be swell.

Perhaps the selfish gene is inherent in all individuals and as a result of exposure to environmental conditions unique to those your sisters are currently exposed to have caused this unusually exaggerated phenotype?

Is it just me or does the swimwear fabric look like the leopard print pencil skirt and jacket? :-) Either way, it looks great!

I love your fabric acquisitions and the shoes as well. Do your parents want another child? LOL. BTW – I wear a size 5 as well (can sometimes get away with a 5.5). Enjoy!

I bought a point de roma from Fabric.com for $1.95 a yard. It is stiff and is made of something funky. I’m not sure what to do with it so it will be interesting to see what you make. Mine may end up as homedec interlining.

Ugh- I know exactly which stuff you are talking about- I bought some in white once from fabric.com, and it’s nasty. It looks and feels like some sort of medical bandage. The black and white stuff I got from Fabric Mart is not the same- it’s much softer. If you want to order doubleknit from Fabric.com in the future, I would recommend going with their Sophia Double Knit rather than what they call “ponte di roma.” The Sophia is much more like what my local fabric store calls ponte di roma- it’s softer and much more wearable.
