Well everyone, it’s been a couple of months since I moved, and yet I’m still not back on top of my sewing or blogging. Jeez, I’m still not on top of my unpacking. I will confess to having sewn up a cowl necked sweater from a back issue of Burda which I have yet to photograph mostly because it came out kind of bleh. And I’m starting work on something new and exciting, pictures to come.
As for Burda, they’re starting the year off promptly with their January 2011 early preview already online. Readers, one of my big sewing wishes for the coming year is some *great* Burdas. I haven’t gone back to check, but I get the feeling I didn’t sew anything from a single 2010 issue. January issues have to be judged with a bit of a handicap because they usually have the cuddly but run of the mill stay-at-home-on-the-couch sweats collection (doubtless the only things that fit after too many holiday sweets), and the Fasching gear, which is often more craft than sewing. Let’s get our chuckles out of the way now, shall we?
If anyone makes this and can send me a photograph of the finished costume (yes, puffy arms and all) on a man out in public, I will happily feature you on my blog as one of my great sewing heroes. Even the Selfish Seamstress is not enough of a beeyatch to subject Dan to this pasty-armed, spinat-laced delight.
So, the good news is that there’s some great styling in this issue and looks like it could have quite a bit of potential for the tall ladies. These clothes would eat me alive, but look cute on the models, such as the below-the-knee flared skirt:
And this 1930s-inspired, single-breasted belted coat, again hitting well below the knee:
And this looks pretty, even though I suspect that under the cinching obi style belt, it’s just another one of those really long shirts that Burda likes so much, possibly with a slanted placket. We’ll see soon!
Then there are some other garments that I think *could* look good on the right tall women, but would probably be Hefty bags on most mortals, and certainly on the pinky finger-sized Selfish Seamstress:
In case you’re wondering what such a dress looks like on an intellectual, here it is again, this time with books and glasses:
If she’s so smart, why’d she pick that dress? Hahahaha. I love how funny I find myself to be!
Anyway, better a roomy dress than a roomy crotch:
Please someone explain to me why this trend is not dead yet. It’s not because Burda is a European magazine. I’m here in Europe, and people are not walking around with webbed thighs. It’s aspirational dressing I suppose, if what you aspire to be is a flying squirrel:
Maybe I’m just turned off by the fact that these pants are misguidedly tucked into above-the-knee boots with giant flappy cuffs. The correct accessories for these pants would be a “what are you looking at” stance and your best bitchface:
Perfect for kicking back with some DVDs on a winter afternoon.
By the way, there’s always someone who comes by and comments that they love the Hammer/harem pants, and that they’re soooo comfy and sexy. All I can say is that although I don’t agree with your opinion, I completely support your right to wear them, as well as my right to snicker cruelly once you are out of earshot.
And once again, the plus sizes garments are the winners. So classic, so wearable, so pretty, and so beautifully styled. My work wardrobe is definitely calling out for a scarlet tie blouse and camel pencil skirt:
Based on this limited preview, there’s nothing for me yet, but overall the issue isn’t looking bad, especially if you’re tall or plus. It gives me a little hope that there might be some goodies in it for me once the full preview is out. And with the holidays looming up ahead, I’m all about the goodies for ME.

I agree with you on, looks great on tall women. I’m 5′ tall and none of these inspire me either. Now that Popeye costume! And those Hammer pants! WTF? I will be with you snickering behind their back also!

I laughed out loud at the flying squirrel comparison.
I do like the look of the dress with the obi belt. Let’s hope it has at least a semblance of structure!
Good luck with feeling completely settled in. I know that takes time, especially when you move continents – and even more so when, as is probably the case with you, you have loads of work settling into your new job.

(I say this as a woman who, at 5’8″ with a 34 inch inseam, would rather like most of their Petite patterns but can’t have them. Harumph.)

:-). I do try for the tall and bitchy look. Alas, it all depends which side of the Atlantic I’m on. I can swing tall well enough in the South of France, but I can only do bitchy really well in California. Sigh.
In defense of sarouels, aka MCHammer pants, I’m old enough to have worn them in the 80s, and they are indeed divinely comfortable. In summer they feel like nothing, in winter you can pile on 4 layers of long johns with no problem. Great as pjs, great for yoga. Here in France, they’re popular with the ‘alternative’ teenagers, not with a remote in hand but with a joint. No grown-ups wear them. Of course any notion of comfort here, especially for women, is laughable.
I confess though that I’m on my 4th iteration of the turtleneck from September. Really easy, really wearable result, much cooler than usual turtlenecks. I’m going to have to stop making them before March rolls along..

I’m really digging the ‘intellectual’ dress.
I know it won’t be for everyone. Sometimes I like to show off the (more than ample) assets on the bottom half of my body, rather than emphasis my (less than average) top half. Also low back lines show off my tattoo.
I think I could ‘make it work’ even though I’m kinda short.

I’m with you, Loren. This dress wins with me for the exact same reasons you stated. I am also insanely in love with those booties she’s wearing, even though I could never walk in them.

Wow, I don’t think I knew what a flying squirrel looked like. Thank you for the picture. What a sinister looking little beastie. I would think to be avoided at all costs, along with harem pants. [snicker]

Good to know you’re settling in. You and I share the same petite frame though vanity prevents me from confessing you’re probably more “pinky sized” than I am. Anywho, I agree…those harem pants thingies are scary. Too close to an adult diaper for me.
However, there were a lot of pieces I liked in 2010. Just haven’t sewn many.

And I too, although taller than you, my dear but not what I would consider “tall”, always love the plus size patterns the best. Luckily (or not) I will have to continue to size them down to wear them. Why are they so much nicer than the regular size. I think really it’s the sizing, and the “cutting edge” European fabrications of the regular sizes that are “odd” to my milque toast, ‘merican palate (sp?) Everyone around the world can agree that we ‘mericans have no fashion sense or taste whatsoever!

I can confirm that Harem pants are pretty popular in some European countries, though I saw them mostly during the summer. Not my style though

Umm, those models are PLUS?! Eek!
I think those roomy crotch pants look perfect for going through airport security. Imagine all the contraband you could sneak through!
And that dress? Looks like a maternity ensemble to me.
Happy sewing!

hhmm, I like harem pants. I think they are sexy.
I could not resist.
I love the tie blouse with the pencil skirt.
I am tall, but I can’t wear those mid-calf lengths either. I think it takes a long-legged person and mine are only average (in relation to my torso, anyway).
Welcome back to the blogosphere. Your voice is missed when you get too busy for us!

When MC Hammer came along, my flatmate used to call those things dumping trousers – because you could take a dump in them. At least there is some logic to dressing like a flying squirrel.

Your flying-squirrel analogy *almost* makes me like the hammer-pants. (I do like the sweater she’s wearing with them)
Speaking as someone who generally passes for “tall” (albeit on the short side of tall), I am not supremely enthused. The long skirt looks nice.

So far I’m digging the mauve over-the-knee boots the most. Along with the plus-sized stuff. Why can’t they just make the plus sized stuff in ALL the sizes!? Oh wait, they did nice pieces in non-plus sizes, about 3 years ago! I continue to be so glad I have about all of 2005 through 2008.
But back to the boots. I really really like those. A bit Robin Hood-y (haha, Robin Hoody sounds like the kind of name ModCloth would give a fancy hoody) but the mauve helps, a lot, as far as my tastes go.
If anyone gets this issue can they let me know who the boots are by?

My favorite part is that although it’s a pattern to custom-make a costume, Popeye is suffering from some weird disease where he has a brown face but white arms. Seriously, Burda?
Flying squirrel pic hilarious.

HATE the evil flying squirrel pants. Although I have nothing against flying squirrels, per se. In fact, I now feel kind of bad for that poor little rat with wings, being compared to a big droopy poopy pants like that.
But I digress. Love the funky teal cowl(?) sweater.
I wonder if a certain sewing nemesis with a husband named Michael will make that sailor suit just to be cheeky…

I’m 5’9″, and a couple of those pieces appeal to me, which is more than I can say about the last couple of Burdas. It’s been a complete desirable-pattern famine.
I also find the plus sized patterns in Burda consistently more appealing than the “regular” sizes. I’m in between 42 and 44, which means I can make them work without too much work..
December 4, 2010 at 10:19 pm

In the “what are you looking at” version of the Hammerpants there’s a creepy second person hiding under the blanket. There’s a hand, and what looks like a comb-over. Does she know he’s there? Is she giving him the bitchface because she’s sick of watching “Men of a Certain Age”?
December 6, 2010 at 8:55 pm

I don’t see the disembodied hand but I do see the ghostly ectoplasm grabbing her leg. Probably trying to get those butt ugly pants off and do the poor woman a favour by burning them for her.
December 7, 2010 at 2:28 pm

I don’t think that’s a hand, I think it’s folds from a folder over pillow.
And I agree, the hammer pants are ridiculous.

Hm, Re: intelectual in a roomy dress: If she’s so smart, why did she pick those booties for climbing on a ladder with hands full of books (eventually)? I do have some experience with climbing to tall bookcases (on a chair in my case) and the best footwear for such a quest is going barefoot.
I kind of like that long skirt, but I’m in the part of world’s population that would not look good in it…

Well, I finally got a look at the full photo preview (no line drawings yet) and, while I like several things, I have to agree: the dresses, skirts and even pants seem to say “Tall Girl” to me too!

Megan Messymethod
I am 5’10 and love the tall gal clothes SO MUCH. I always jump on it when the 30s-via-70s look comes back. I don’t normally like Burda patterns because I am inherently frumpier than Burda, which speaks volumes about the frumpifying effect of those mid-calf skirts, etc. so you are probably correct to admire them in the pictorials but avoid them IRL.
December 13, 2010 at 5:15 am
Lucy
The full line drawings are now up on the Russian site. Not particularly impressed, I have to say, and I’m 6’0″. As you say, there are some nice things in the Plus section, but that’s not much use to me.
I have a self-imposed guide that I have to want to make at least two items for an issue to be worth buying, and this only has one – the short jacket 106. Personally I’m going to hang on to my money for when a couple of back issues that I’m after appear on Ebay.

I get the same sinking feeling in my gut every time I see a picture of someone in harem pants (because I’ve never seen anybody sink so low in real life) as I did when my toddlers waddled by with a saggy diaper. I think, “If I pretend I don’t notice them, then somebody else will eventually change them.”
It also brings out the inner 5-yr-old in me, in that I want to taunt them by saying, “PYEW! That’s quite a stinky load you’re wearing!” But I remember myself and refrain. I am a grown-up now, after all. ;)

I first saw the revival of the Hammer Jammers when I was living in Spain in the fall of 2007, and I was quite disenchanted…so I aptly and repulsively began to refer to them as the “I-crapped-my-pants pants”…indeed I concur, how are they not yet dead?

I dunno… I was thrilled with the 40’s take after the shockingly horrible 80’s December issue. I really liked all these looks (barring the dropped crotch yoga stuff). I’m not particularly tall: 5’6″ and curvy – well, ok, PLUS according to pattern sizes – but I never let that deter me from wearing stuff I like. A good pair of heels adds 3″ or 5″ if I’m up to the torture. I say work it if you like it, and let peeps be catty (or envious?) if they like!

Dear Selfish,
Based on the comments above, you must know that you are missed. However, I don’t know if you realize that without your inspiration, many of us (A-hem…other people. Not me, never. Okay, me.) are being doomed to a life of un-selfish seamstressing. Since you last posted, I have made a quilt for a friend, a purse as a Christmas gift, and I have committed to making runners for bookcases, to covering couch cushions, and to making something for a friend’s baby. How many garments have I sewn for myself? NONE! I need to see a selfish darkness at the end of this blinding tunnel. While I await your return I’ll just be here, sewing great stuff and giving it away.
Sincerely,
A Concerned Citizen

I also have made a quilt for my friend’s baby and repaired my boyfriend’s trousers .. I mean WTF?

This is the ultimate act of selfishness.

Hopefully, you are at-least still finding time to sew, if not to blog.

Please oh please tell me your working on a book. I will read 10 pages at a time with my am coffee. That way it will feel bloggy and I won’t have to leave desperate comments. Seriously. A book. Please. You’re a great writer.

Selfish seamstress, I am missing you! I fear I am becoming generous due to the lack of selfish inspiration!

Hi Selfish, I see from the Aachen University website that you are a Visiting Researcher!! Well that is where you are hiding.

You should be selfishly proud- I just found your site today and was so interested that I read through all of your finished objects and half of the rest of your posts in one sitting. Sorry to see that you haven’t posted in some time though. =(

I keep popping back in case there is a new post but sadly there isn’t. I suspect that Vogue Patterns Magazine may contractually own the rights to Selfish Seamstress now, as Elaine is continuing to write articles for them, and that she is not permitted to post elsewhere while writing for them. I was so looking forward to seeing the curtains too.
It must be extremely frustrating to read all of these comments and not be able to respond. I’m hoping that the fact that this blog hasn’t disappeared means that she will come back to it one day.

The signature at the end of the articles in the Voge Patterns magazine used to say that she maintained this blog, but recently that disappeared. I’m thinking she’s just too busy with other things. It’s too bad too, because without her support, I’ve been reduced to sewing for others, one of whom is a child!!

You’re hilarious, I giggled all the way through this post! Maybe I will see if the beau is up for this Pop eye costume. He he. Great Burda preview, I think I see some definite goodies!

I’m leaving this as a comment so that I can tick off the “notify me” box. Hope you’re back soon.

we’ve missed you!!! funny as ever… love the “webbed thighs” commentary! although i will shamefully admit to searching for this exact pattern recently… i kinda love the webbed thigh look… i will wait for simplicity because i cant keep away from a 99cent sale {and am clearly too cheap to buy burda} so good to hear from you!!!!!

[…] the January 2011 was the first Burdastyle magazine that I read about on Selfish Seamstress’s preview, which I call the “Infamous Hammerpants Issue.” Heehee: How is this flattering […]

Ha, I just subscribed to your blog and was reading through your older posts when I came across this one. I actually DID make a costume for my husband (which he wore out in public) that looks just like the Popeye one (complete with puffy arms!) back in 2009. Maybe Burda copied me!! I can send you a picture if you want to see it. :)
