I’m at the airport surfing the internets waiting to board my flight, and happened to check out the enemy territory. And it got me thinking about my style icons. Of course I worship at all of the usual shrines of Dior and Edith Head, but being at the airport also reminded me of one of my favorite “fashion” websites ever, Uniform Freak, an online “museum” of flight attendant uniforms collected and maintained by a former KLM flight attendant.
Check out some of these adorable vintage TWA flight attendant uniforms. I would love to wear one of these!
And after a trip that took me through Dubai, I very nearly considered applying to be a Gulf Air flight attendant, just so I could wear this fantastic hat:
My flight’s leaving… see you in Seattle and have fun browsing the sartorial heyday of stewardesses!

Definitely the silver shoes with that dress. This dress remake is smokin’ hot, Selfish! I went to a Sri Lankan wedding, and thought I looked pretty swank until all the women in gorgeous saris surrounded me. You, however, will hold your own in this outfit. BUT…I am still awaiting the shrest wedding apparel, so no matter how good you look I remain somewhat disappointed.

I’m not feeling the first one (and why is it so wrinkly?), but the rest, yes, please!

I love the uniforms. I only wish that he could show models of the appropriate nationality wearing the uniforms. What a great hobby he has. Thanks for the link.

I wish I could remember which airline it was where the hostesses were in hotpants in the 70s … was it Virgin? I can’t really click through his entire collection to find out!

I was a flight attendant for TWA in the 60’s and 70’s and we wore hot pants under the front buttoned dress which was in dark brown, beige or cranberry. Valentino scarves around our necks was a part of the uniform. I remember these uniforms well.

Ooh cool – thanks for sharing! Reminds me of that movie ‘Catch me if you can’ where Leonardo pretends to be a pilot :)

But why is the Gulf Air flight attendant so sad? There is obviously something going on there. Probably unrequited love for the pilot, or maybe her polyester workwear is chafing in the desert heat. Still she’s sad but stylish which is what matters.
