Oh my goodness! Dear readers, thank you for your outpouring of warmth and congratulations over my recent engagement-inducing puppetmastery of Dan via sewing. Hopefully Dan will not realize how he has been manipulated into matrimonial subservience until it is much too late. And I am so very happy to receive all of your warm wishes and words, I can’t even express it. The Selfish Seamstress is at a loss for words. All I can say is, thank you, June, Cidell, Bernadette, Koritsimou, lunatepetal, Amber, Amanda S., Rachel, Daci, Hashi, sa, Auntie Allyn, Brooke, Jan, jen, Elizabeth, sandoz18, Karen, Rachelle, Karin, Kathleen, nettie, Colleen P., Sewing Sue, Tasia, Belly, a peppermint penguin, Christy, Rachel, Debi, Shelley, Leigh, Susan Davis, MakingTime, wendy, Claudine, CGCouture, HollyS, Nikole, Katie, Trisha, Meredith P, NT, Dora, Peter, wan-nabe, Cindy, Angie, Megan, Lee, meli88a, Trena, LindaC, reilly, Beangirl, Susan, Margaret, bookishbella, Len, Angela, Tracy, Uta, Nancy K, Debbie Cook, earthanddust, Karin (the Mrs.), Alison, Stephanie, Crystal, CarmencitaB, girdtmom, Stef, JillyB, Jenny, D, Venus de Hilo, Isaspacey, Plummy, Kim, Lee-Ann Galway, Vicki, Samina, Eloise, Janice, Paula Lemos, BeckyMc, Sue Prichard, beth, Silvia, Sherry, Daisy, Sue, Karen, Stephanie, Jessica, becky, Elly, Remnant, yazmins, dana, yoshimi, Shirley, Joanna, Ann’s Fashion Studio, Vivienne, Jean S, AllisonC, AlewivesGirl, Amy, Nikki, Victoria Baylor, Noile, A Sewn Wardrobe, AmyG, Reethi, Karen, Andrea, Whitney, Jennifer Susannah (the other one), Lise, Vicky, Jane, Henriette, Shannon, jenny, seemane, Becky, Renee, Vicky@coffeeandmilkies, Laurie, Sara, Erin, Benny the Bunny, Melissa, Pattie, line3arossa, Sarah M., various Anonymous commenters, well-wishing lurkers, and anyone else I might have missed. I would hug you all personally if I could! And this coming from the Selfish Seamstress, who has NEVER hugged anyone in her entire life except her cat.
Just a thing or two about the ring since there were so many comments about how interesting and unusual it is. Don’t worry, I am not becoming one of those engaged people who blabs and blabs about her ring. Just this once. Dan picked the ring out from a company called greenKarat, which sells ethically and environmentally conscious jewelry, relying on recycled materials and conflict-free stones. The ring itself is made from reclaimed platinum and set with a lab created emerald (i.e. not mined.) I adore it, not least of all because he put so much thought into finding a ring that I would love to wear and that works well with our values. I’ve never been much of a jewelry person and would probably not have minded if the ring had come from a cereal box, as long as it was from Dan, so the simplicity of it suits me well. Not that I’m against big fancy engagement rings in general- I’m always thrilled when friends of mine who really know how to appreciate a giant rock get the ring of their dreams. Such a gem would be wasted on me though. Had Dan presented The Selfish Seamstress with such a ring, her unappreciative and ungrateful response would most likely have been something like, “Seriously? What were you thinking? We could have put all that money towards our retirement!”** Anyway, check out greenKarat if you’re on the market for some new (old) sparkly stuff.
As for the dress, I do plan to make my own, but before you get your hearts all a-flutter, I should burst your bubble by making the disclaimer that we intend to have a very simple, very casual wedding. (We’re hoping for a simple Jewish ceremony followed by a big backyard barbecue with Filipino food, but it’s all still barely in the planning stages and neither of us seems to have access to a big backyard.) I apologize to those of you who were hoping for a fairy tale wedding gown sewing blog saga, complete with tutorials on how to construct a cathedral train or hand bead Alençon lace with individual Swarovski crystals, but right now my dream dress comes down just past my knee and is made of plain white cotton voile. The Selfish Seamstress intends to be a dull bride, indeed! Don’t worry though- there may be a fun tulle underskirt hidden somewhere. (Probably under the skirt.)
Of course, I’m looking to all the usual sources for inspiration, like Audrey in Funny Face:
And Grace. No, not that Grace Kelly wedding dress, but this other one from High Society:
I’m not planning on copying either of these wholesale (definitely can’t pull off those balloon sleeves), but I do hope to capture something of their flavor. Not thinking too hard about it just yet though :)
As for the bridesmaids, my sisters have already been informed that they can wear whatever they want, new or from their closets, matching not required. (Do I even have to state that I will not be sewing dresses for them?) And my other attendant will probably be a guy, which means boring clothes. Leave it to the Selfish Seamstress to suck all the fun and pomp out of a wedding, right??
** “our retirement” is the phrase the Selfish Seamstress would have used in this situation, but in her head what she really would mean is “my Bernina 830.”

You are very welcome. You provide such entertainment, good wishes is the least that can be given in return.
Your wedding plans sound just wonderful. I am generally in favour of marriage and generally not in favour of weddings, so your plans seem just perfect and likely (backyard finding aside) to be without all the silly angst that spoils things. So good on you.
And oh boy, what a find you have in your Dan, an ethically sourced ring that he knew you’d like. You lucky thing.
Couldn’t you make the Bernina 830 one of the bridesmaids??
Cheers,
AJ
PS both those films are amongst my favourites and if anyone can wear Audrey it’s you!

The problem with having the Bernina 830 present at the wedding is that I would probably insist on marrying it instead of Dan. And that would just make things AWKWARD for the guests!

Congrats from me too!
And I just have to say, three cheers for letting your bridesmaids wear what they want!

Was I hoping you’d sew a huge confection of a dress complete with cathedral train, petticoat, lace, beading and the like? Of course! Does the wedding dress you’re envisioning suit you more? Absolutely. :) I still maintain, though, that whatever you come up with will be beautiful and ridiculously fabulous. As I’ve said before, you do special occasion stuff so very well.
I realize the blog won’t turn into a wedding saga, but regular updates are greatly appreciated. ‘kay thanks. :)

Don’t worry, if there’s sewing going on (which there will be), there will be blogging.
In fact, it seems like there isn’t even that much sewing that goes on in my house, and yet there’s always still blogging. :D

Does Bernina have a bridal registry? Maybe they should! Mazel tov again and yes to a simple wedding and simple, elegant dress (a la Audrey). I’m attending a garden-casual wedding next week, wearing Burda 05-2005-113 in a floral georgette, provided I finish the hem on time.

Ooooohhh Bernina bridal registry…. I feel a Bridezilla moment coming on….
Good luck with the hem, and my hat is off to you for sewing with sheers!

Congratulations and I love your non-traditional, eco-friendly ring!
Ah, that’s too bad about the elaborate wedding gown, but I’ve already gotten my fix from my neighbor (one of the few people I know that sews). She spent about 3 months!!! creating a gown for her daughter, sewing on thousands of beads and individually placing the lace on the overdress. And she said it was so much fun. Then she made all the bridesmaids dresses (4), the flower girl dress, the flower arrangements, and her mother of the bride dress. My daughter is so getting jipped…I’m not doing that and I don’t care how much she begs. ; )

Wow– your neighbor sounds like a badass! It’s good to know those people. I’ll never be one of them, but I’d sure like to hang out at her house and watch :)

Ahhh, another chilled-out, sane bride. Sister!
As you start to enter the deep and murky world of The Wedding Blog, you will find that we are a truly endangered species. And be prepared to be SHOCKED at how much it costs just to feed and water people. Ice swan sculptures be damned, even just the very simplest of food and drink is shockingly expensive when you multiply it by 85 and add on tax. And if you want recommendations on free online resources, I’ve been keeping a personal Google Notebook full of links I can send you.

I’m trying to think of it as just a regular big party with a little ceremony tacked on at the front, but I know that as it comes closer, it will be stressful regardless :) Congratulations on yours and I’ll be dropping you an email for your suggestions!

I think your plans sound LOVELY! I am engaged as well, buying my dress because I am not that great a sewing yet (only been sewing since December), and having a large church wedding! It is MY dream wedding, so I am absolutely thrilled to have it, but really it would be much less stressful to have a simple backyard wedding! I think those are so nice and pretty and family and friends oriented. Everyone always has a great time at a wedding like that! You are going to be a stunning bride! Congrats again!

Congratulations!! I love any kind of wedding (big, small, fancy, simple, religious, secular) as long as it’s what the bride and groom want. I’m so glad to hear you’ll be having your dream wedding, and I hope you’ve got lots of support in case it gets stressful :) And if you want to sew something, make yourself something pretty and simple for your honeymoon :) Lots of luck to you!

I made my own wedding dress….since I was not only getting married but also leaving a job I loved and a city I loved to move across the country, it turned out to be one of the best things I’ve ever done. It truly saved a chunk of my sanity. (Also? it had POCKETS! I loves me some pockets.)
Still have the dress. And the husband. All around, a good deal!

Yay to not stressing over details (e.g., bridesmaids dresses). Just be prepared someone else may start stressing instead! My mother chose the day before the wedding to show her nerves and pick on my (non-existent headpiece). So I got one (mumbling I won’t stress, I won’t stress…) To this day when seeing the pics I wonder WHAT am I wearing in my hair there…? Fun times!

You’ll hear no disdainful comments from me about a simple wedding! The first wedding was simple, but still church and stuff. The second time, I got married at the American consulate in Seoul, in jeans and hiking boots.
I will definitely check out the greenKarat site, that sounds like my kind of thing!
Again, congratulations!

Why did I think you all were already married? I guess it was just meant to be. Congrats on you future big day, which it will be even if simple. Trust me on this. My upcoming wedding is tiny and there are still many details to consider!
Anyway, this is happy news. I look forward to seeing what you come up with for your dress.

My wedding number 1 was a simple, non-denominational service in my parents backyard, self catered (hubby owned a food store), homemade dress (above the knee), 40 guests. My witness (no bridesmaids etc) was a man. Wedding – great, hubby, not so much!
Wedding #2 was in Stanley Park with a civil ceremony performed by a licenced officiant. I made my dress (of course) from Sari fabric & Hubby, a metalworker made his own ring!! Witnesses: 4, we all went out for indian food after. Wedding, great, hubby even better!
Small weddings ROCK!

I totally agree with you on having a small wedding that is perfect for YOU. My hubbie and I got married last September at the courthouse and had 10 people for dinner at our favorite Italian restaurant. I bought my simple knee length dress off Ebay, made my own bouquet and headpiece and had awesome photos taken at random places around town. Super casual and fun…just the way we wanted it.

Your wedding and dress plans sound perfect. I look forward to all the upcoming posts about them!
Hubbie and I snuck off to get married at the summit of Haleakala (on Maui, where we lived at the time) at sunrise: 5:45 AM. Crazy but magical hour. Just the two of us plus a minister, and a photographer so we could send pics to family and friends who all heard about it the next day. Brrrrrr, it was cold: we wore jeans and polarfleece jackets “monogrammed” with the date and place. My jacket was white, as a nod to convention. Instead of a bouquet we had gorgeous leis, and I wore orchids in my hair.
We celebrated our 5th anniversary a few days ago, and I still don’t feel like throwing a party. Maybe for our 10th… by then my sewing skills might be up to sewing a luscious party dress.

I can’t envision your wedding any differently than as you’ve indicated. I do look forward to seeing what you come up for a dress, though. I do like the idea of a Bernina registery, though!

In the interest of helping you get your Bernina, here are my 2 favorite cost-cutting ideas. I contacted the local university photography and music professors and they recommended a recent photography grad for our photos and a very talented solo guitarist for our ceremony music. Saved us tons of cash and the results were awesome. Now that I think about it, where the heck is my Bernina?!

Hi, I’m a blog lurker. But news like an engagement can bring me out of hiding to say congratulations.
I love your ring. I am also a small ring person. I had a simple antique sapphire ring that was both my engagement ring and wedding ban. That is past tense because it was crushed when I tried to start a lawn mower (pull rope thing)…the gold was just too thin. So I got a second chance to pick out a ring just 4 years after getting married. I went with rubies and diamonds (small diamonds).
Also, I’m a small wedding person. We had 20 people at our wedding (including us, preacher and photographer). I didn’t make my own dress. I did make my own dress when we renewed our vows (when I got my new ring).

Your plans for your wedding sound Super! I also couldn’t see going into Bankruptcy for my ring and wedding – also I didn’t want to support the cruelty of the diamond mines – I got my engagement ring from http://www.diamond-essence.com/ I get so many compliments, no one knows if I don’t tell them it’s a CZ. We had a small wedding the two of us and an attendant in Las Vegas and then walked the strip in our dresses and DH in his tux. We took a gondola ride at the Venetian Hotel, went to the top of the Eiffel Tower at the Paris. Played the slots at the New York. I copied a Jim Hjelm Couture dress that was $4000.00 for $200.00 and his didn’t even have any beading on the English netting. It was great memories and that was ten years ago.

Im sorry Im late with the congrats, but oh well.
I have to say that I didnt expect you to have a huge wedding. You seem to be a very simple and streamlined kind of person. But I do have a 3 acre backyard with lots of trees if you are in need of it. :)

I always wanted a small (but elegant) wedding, but then we made a list of all the people we loved enough to want to have them there and suddenly it was a big wedding. I did make my dress and it was fabulous (I have to dig out some photos and blog about it sometime)… Floor length, princess seamed, full skirt, silk shantung with a silk chiffon overlay on which I handsewed silk lace vines all over the bodice area and added tiny glass beads, an invisible zipper up the back with twenty three self-fabric covered buttons and working loops… Sigh. I love that dress. It felt so good to wear, too… It was even lined in silk…
Oh, and I sewed my silk veil to the comb at the last minute with dental floss because somehow I didn’t bring my emergency sewing kit to the church :)
hmmm… Thanks for the opportunity to remenisce :). I can’t wait to see your design process and, of course, the final product!

I find something inherently tacky about huge grandiose weddings and their receptions (complete with different food stations, a DJ and a dance floor)
Both of my sisters had small, tasteful weddings – one had her reception as a luncheon buffet with classical music on CD being played, the other in the courtyard of a vineyard in Sonoma with a string quartet. Neither one had more than 50 people.
Contrast that to my ex best friend – drunk and shaking it in her poofy gown to Run DMC while people were chowing down on sushi and pasta. ick.
I’ve already told my boy that instead of a ring I want furniture (I’m in interior design) and that are wedding might just be a potluck picnic in the park (we know a lot of people who cook…) And, he doesn’t even have to wear a suit, unless he wants to….
Congrats again!

Obviously my previous comment needs no explanation, however I find it difficult to believe that you are passing up the opportunity to outfit your bridal party (and possibly ALL attendees) with shrests. After all, it’s the one day when people wear what you tell them to wear. Are you sure you want to turn your back on this golden moment? Viva le shrest!

I love the sound of your wedding plans! Can’t wait to “work through” the dress design and construction with you! 35 years ago, when I was 10 er 8 er 6 years old, I got married. Still am, to same wonderful guy. Simple is best, because…I hate to break it to any of the newly engaged…it’s not the most important day of your life. The next day, and the next day, and the next day…after that are. JMO
And excellent job on training Dan to accept sewing and shopping in fabric stores, etc. My DH can watch them cut (and make sure I’m not shorted by accident) AND calculate the price all at the same time. Me? I’m wandering around, always distracted, looking at more fabric.
If you did have the 830 as an attendant, she’d need wheels, as she is…ahem…a big girl. But she’d look smashing in a black and white shrest!

Aaah, too cute! The boy’s right, someone who makes you funny pajamas is worth hanging on to, even if it’s occasional. And the ring’s perfect, beautiful and very thoughtful. Am looking forward to seeing what dress you come up with, I’m sure it’ll be much cooler than anything in a shop. And you won’t have any trouble finding bridesmaids by the bushel, those rare conditions will bring you applicants from all over the world.
Make him a pocket square for the wedding to match your dress, and you’ll be in control for the next 10 years :-).

Um. two more: McCall’s 5403 and Vogue 9803, just in case you DID want to try those balloon sleeves on G. Kelly. Because, that’s exactly why I saved this pattern, thinking it could be removed after the ceremony or even just put on for the pictures. It’s cute, no?

I’m such a “dur” that I saw the ring, thought “how sweet!” and didn’t realize it was THAT kind of ring–CONGRATS! May you have the loveliest selfishest wedding (though something tells me it will be anything but selfish now that you admitted you want to hug readers…)

I can’t wait to see what you do! I love simple. My favorite celebrity wedding dress of recent times was Carolyn Bessette’s when she married JFK Jr. My own dress was a simple sundress (not made by me, I didn’t sew yet) and we were married on a beach in St. John, USVI. Just the 2 of us. We threw a party in a park when we returned.
Anyway, I’m not here for shameless self-promotion, but I do want to let you know that Harmony Art has a beautiful white, organic cotton sateen in 110″ width. I do carry it in my shop (well, did, I have it on re-order and will receive it by next week.) I’d love to send a swatch, if you’re interested, just email me.

Congratulations, Elaine! We had a backyard wedding as well. And my best advice for you: ALWAYS tell the people (bakery, flowers, drinks, etc.) you are going to celebrate your birthday. It saves you a lot. My three-layered “birthday” cake was only 100 € instead of the 400 € the bakery wanted for a wedding cake.
