The Selfish Seamstress is on tour again, spreading the word of selfishness throughout the land! Or perhaps just traveling for work and a wedding. I’ll be away from my sewing machine for the next week, trekking down to Atlanta and then swinging through Chicago. There won’t be any sewing happening on my end, so there won’t be a whole lot of sewing blogging going on either. But wherever I am, and whatever I’m doing, you can bet I’ll be thinking of you. And how best to take advantage of your weaknesses and exploit your strengths to my benefit.

So happy to know that your devilish mind never rests. You motivated me to complete 2 small projects this weekend — a file cabinet cover and some sleep shorts for my daughter, so thank you : )

Have fun….. I’ll be in Chicago too from April 14 through the 23rd. Love you new coat! Are you wearing your new coat on your trip? You are an inspiration to me. I have complained and struggled with an inadequate and cheap sewing machine. While I’m in Chicago, I’m looking at a Viking sewing machine.

I don’t know why, but I always thought you lived in Chicago.

Hope you have a safe and wonderful trip. And I wish you great success spreading selfishness across the land.

Chicago is probably still under snow, but you could wear your gorgeous new trench coat in Atlanta! It’s great to go have Spring-preview somewhere else :-).

As a matter of fact, I live outside Chicago and at 7:31 AM it’s 52 degrees (F) here–and yesterday it must have gotten up to 75, so no, we haven’t seen any snow for a while. (I was under the impression for a while the Selfish Seamstress lived in Chicago too, but became disabused of the notion as her weather (cold, windy) was not matching what was happening here.)

Put me down as another person traveling to Chicago this coming weekend. I’m excited to hit some fabric stores because gawd knows my hometown has little to recommend it, textile-wise. Amy, what are your recommendations?
I’ll keep an eye out for that Key Lime Trench. Don’t wear it if you want to be incognito!

Barbara, I highly recommend Vogue Fabrics. which is actually in Evanston just north of the city. it is easily accessible by public transit and is my favorite fabric store here in Chicago. 718 Main St, Evanston IL http://www.voguefabricsstore.com
Actually they also have one closer to downtown but the one in Evanston is better and the walk is less creepy and long and there are better other places to go nearby like Dave’s down to earth rock shop and fossil museum and Blind Faith Cafe.
Another good one to check out is Fabric Discount Warehouse also known as L-Z. 2121 W 21st St. Also accessible by pub trans. i haven’t been there in awhile but you may have to poke around a bit there. It really is a warehouse. I remember getting a good deal on some wool when I was last there but that was a few years back.
i am willing to meet up with anyone in Chicago. Maybe that’s kinda creepy but i don’t have any sewing buddies outside of blog world and would love to talk about it without the other person’s eyes glazing over :)

There are many recommendations for fabric shopping in the latest Vogue pattern magazine…

I, too, live in Chicago! And actually pretty close to Vogue’s Evanston store (which bodes ill for any Saturday afternoon in which I don’t want to spend money). I’d love to meet up with other sew-ists living in the area or visiting!
Actually, if anyone is interested, I organize a sewing & craft lounge at my church that is happening this Friday night from 7-10pm. We’re located in the Andersonville neighborhood at Ashland and Berwyn. You can find more details at http://www.firstfree.com/article232712.htm. We’re a pretty easy-going group and you definitely don’t have to pretend to be interested in religion to join. I’d also be interested in a Vogue Fabrics meet-up!
A side note about the Fabric Discount Warehouse: I went on an “adventure” there right after Christmas and came away with some fantastic stash! You usually have to dig for the good stuff – but will find your reward in things like a B&W wool hounds-tooth check (I bought the last of a bolt -about 3 yards- for only $7!).

Amy, thanks so much for your response. I purchased the magazine lin3arossa mentioned but both my time and my host’s patience will be limited so wanted to zero in on the best locations.

For fabric also check out The Needleshop in Chicago http://www.theneedleshop.net
If you don’t want to trek up to Evanston the nice thing about the Vogue Fabric south of downtown is that it’s a block away from Fishman’s http://www.fishmansfabrics.com/

Well, my weekend in Chicago has been canceled but I will be there in mid May – providing the wedding I was going up this weekend to help plan is not also canceled. Yeah, and let’s not talk about the cost of changing plane tickets :(
I would love to meet up with you guys at that time. Thanks for the fabric shops tips. I’ll put them to good use eventually.
