Just when I resolved not to buy any more patterns, I discovered Vogue 2925 on Amanda’s blog and found the jacket of my dreams:
Very petite (read: tiny and shapeless) women know how hard it is to find a suit jacket that doesn’t make you look like you’re a kid trying on mommy’s clothes. I have decided that this is exactly the jacket I need. But, it’s out of print. So, I could buy the out of print copy from Vogue, or, I could use this as an opportunity to reduce my pattern stash, and maybe help you reduce yours if you happen to have this pattern lying around and know that you’re never going to get around to sewing it.
Here are some treats I pulled out of my overflowing Sterlite container. I will give you, oh, let’s say any 3 of these in exchange for Vogue 2925 in size A (6-8-10) (please not the other sizes because I already have to grade down to a 4.) Heck, even if you’ve already cut and used the skirt or the top and just have the jacket pattern intact, I’ll happily take that! All the following patterns are complete and uncut except for the one vintage one noted. There’s nothing wrong with them except that I know I won’t ever get around to making them.
First up, the current and very popular V1117 Michael Kors dress in size AAX (4-6-8-10.) This dress was part of his lovely Fall 2008 collection. Somehow I ended up with two copies of this pattern:
This lovely Maggy London knit dress with ruched waist and drapey neckline. This is Butterick 5078, now out of print. It comes in size BB (8-10-12-14):
If you’re ready for some summer sewing, this is New Look 6242 in size A (6-16!) which has patterns for halter dresses, a halter top, and an easy skirt, I believe also out of print:
From Simplicity’s Threads magazine collection, this is a versatile short jacket with lots of collar and sleeve variations. This is Simplicity 4256 in size H5 (6-8-10-12-14), now out of print:
Another versatile pattern, McCall’s 4930 size BB (8-10-12-14) from the Palmer/Pletsch Classic Fit collection. This includes patterns for a jacket, dress with cap sleeves and godets, and pants. I believe this is also out of print:
The very popular Vogue Easy Options 8280, which is a clone of the Roland Mouret Galaxy Dress. This is in size AX (4-6-8):
And now for some vintage treats. First, a reissued pattern from 1960, Butterick 6582, which includes patterns for a sheath and full-skirted variation with cute ruched shoulders. This pattern comes in sizes 6-8-10:
Then a bona fide vintage pattern- no date on this one, but judging by the artwork, I’d say it’s probably from the mid to late 50s. Simplicity 2438 is a pattern for some cute sailor blouses with various options for collars, sleeves, and waist details, vintage size 11, with a 31.5 inch bust. The envelope is torn along one side, and some of the pieces have been cut, but the pattern is complete:
And finally, a vintage dress pattern with various options for collars and skirts. Again, no date on this one, but it looks early 1960s. Simplicity 4232 in vintage size 11 with a 31.5″ bust. This pattern is complete and mostly uncut (I see a few pieces that have been cut, but most of the pattern is still in factory folds.)
So, fellow stashers and seamstresses, if you have a copy of Vogue 2925 in sizes 6-8-10 that you just know you’re never going to get around to sewing (or even just the uncut jacket pattern!), and you would like THREE of the patterns above, let me know by leaving a comment or mailing me at selfishseamstress[at]gmail[dot]com! You’ll be making a Selfish Seamstress very very happy.

Ah, too bad, I have this pattern but of course it would swim on you! Good luck.

I wish I had it to send your way, but sadly no….
I also have the Butterick 6582 and ADORE the pattern. I adored it so much that the full-skirted one was my first foray into unselfish sewing (for a friend–it came out so fab that I almost told her the dog ate it so I could keep it), but when I made one for myself it looked horrific on me and I ended up giving it away to said lucky friend. The experience taught me to never makes things I like for others again…. Important lesson.

SS/EM! I don’t have that Vogue, I bought the new one with the reprint of the knit top (too cute!) but I am DYING for that Maggy London B5078 cowl knit dress.
I’m emailing you with an offer…

Ok, scratch that. You don’t have a public email.
Here’s my offer. How about I buy the Vogue online for you and you send me the Butterick, the McCall and the New Look?
Email me, ok?

No, I don’t have that pattern for you but I sure wish I did! I’ve been looking for a pattern like that Simplicity 4232… for some insane reason I want to make a sailor blouse. For *me* Of course. But now I can use the pattern number to find one, so thanks for posting it! I also have to refer to an earlier post where you let us see someone’s snarky mean comment of how you looked modeling some dresses. That jerk/person is not just Waaaay out of line but also devoid of design sense and taste. You look fabulous in both of those outfits and you have a really nice figure, and no, I’m not a petite-in-sympathy; I do think you know how to outfit yourself very very well!

If you’re interested in a sailor blouse, Ellen Tracy did a very elegant one for Butterick in 2002, Butterick 3456. It doesn’t have the tie/sash thing in the front, but you could easily add one. It’s a lovely pattern, and also comes with two tastefully designed work-appropriate shirt-style blouses.

Oops, sorry, that’s Linda Allard for Ellen Tracy. That pattern shows up on eBay every now and then, so it shouldn’t be hard to score one.

I have that pattern in size 6-8-10. I do not really want to give it up, as I have not made it yet and also feel it is perfect for sweet petite me, but I will be happy to trace it off and make copies of the instruction pages. Just give me an address to send it to and I’ll take care of it in the next day or two at the most. I’ve just recently found your blog.. it makes me smile so i am happy to help (and let you keep your pattern stash intact!!!)

While I realize your intention is good, this is actually illegal as a violation of copyright laws. By copying patterns and instructions, we keep the designers and producers of the patterns from being profitable, limiting those who will even do it. It would be like photocopying or scanning in entire books to read rather than just a few pages to reference in a term paper. Trading is different in that you are physically passing on the original product rather than producing new product.

I understand your point, but since this particular pattern is OOP I did not feel that this would be an issue. It was not my intent to do anything construed as illegal.

Oh, sorry, no buying patterns. I’d offer to buy and trade, but it looks like Lakaribane beat me to it. Let me know if that falls through!

SS, you sound almost selfless here. I have this pattern in your(our) size.
A haiku for you:
I sewed this pattern
The jacket fits perfectly
You cannot have it

Tiny and shapeless, yes. Owner of Vogue 2925, no.
Which is a real shame since I really, realy like the Michael Kors dress and the Retro Butterick…

Have you found the pattern yet? I have it and I’m having to do some soul searching to see whether I want it or that gorgeous retro dress more …
If we do trade then it’ll be with one caveat – I NEED to keep the knit shirt pattern pieces, all two of them. It’s my second favorite shirt pattern in all creation and I’d need therapy to separate us. You could have the instructions, if I can’t handle a two pattern piece shirt that I’ve made before then I really need to hand in my pins. Anyway, if you’re still interested then I might be persuaded to part from the rest of the pattern. And I’ve got no idea if such pattern splitting is morally permitted – it seems wrong on some level but, at the same time, the jacket and company isn’t getting any love while at my house so it seems kind to send them to a better place.

Eeeek! Yay! I hope your soul searching leads you to conclude that you’re never going to make the jacket because if so, I have lots of other patterns for you! I don’t think there’s anything illegal about the pattern splitting. It’s pattern reproduction that violates copyright. I don’t think anyone can ding you for giving away a pattern that you’re done with or selling it on eBay or anything like that. Anyway, please drop me an email at selfishseamstress[at]gmail[dot]com if you decide you don’t want the jacket part. I’ll cover postage too!

Thank you! I’ve actually been looking on eBay regularly, but stupidly never thought to search on “V2925”! Instead I’ve been searching on “Vogue 2925” which has turned up nothing in the last couple of weeks. As it turns out, there were actually 3 copies available in the smaller size which turned up when I searched on “V2925”! I’ve bought one now (from a different seller with a much more reasonable shipping rate). Thanks for the tip!
