There are two possible ways of interpreting the title of this blog entry. The first way is something like this:
YOU: Hey, I like your Audrey-inspired dress!
THE SELFISH SEAMSTRESS: Thanks! Because I’m so generous, I’ve posted the pattern so that you can make your own Audrey-inspired dress!
The second way to interpret it is something like this:
YOU: I like your Audrey-inspired dress. Can you make one for me?
THE SELFISH SEAMSTRESS: Are you insane?? Do you think I have nothing better to do than sew for you? Whatever. Make your own (damn) Audrey-inspired dress!
I’ll leave you to guess which meaning The Selfish Seamstress intends. (Hint: Generosity is a concept entirely foreign to the Selfish Seamstress.)
Now that we’ve gotten that out of the way, check out the downloads page. I’ve posted the (free) pattern for my Audrey Hepburn/Givenchy-inspired little black dress! It’s only in my size for the time being, which corresponds roughly to a petite Burda size 32. The pattern is pretty basic, but there aren’t any instructions yet, so I’d recommend this for the sewer with some experience in assembling a dress with lining.
If you make one, let me know- I want to see! It’s often said that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, and the Selfish Seamstress just loves to be flattered.

I found your blog via PatternReview and love it. This dress is awesome. Breakfast at Tiffany’s is one of my favorite Audrey Hepburn movies. I was hoping that we were the same size so that I wouldn’t have to figure out how to regrade the pattern!

I love your dress! And I love your web site. What a talented lady!
You have inspired me to draft my own pattern for a dress. I’ve entered into the Wardrobe contest (my first time too) and I have no ideas for a dress. I think I will draft my own.
Cheers,
Lovenicky

What a stunning dress and thank you for your generous gift of the pattern. I have just printed it off and can’t wait to make it up (that is after all the other things I want to sew).

Hi Britta! To make the dress in my size I used less than 1.5 yards of wool suiting, and about that much lining as well. I believe the fabric was 60″ wide. Good luck and let me know how it turns out!

hey elaine! I did it. and it looks amazing. i feel like eating croissants in front of tiffany´s. Perhaps, one morning, i´m going to buy myself a coffee-to-go and drink it in front of my local tiffanys´s store in Frankfurt (Germany). I´d show you a photo but I don´t know how to add it to this comment. do you have an e-mail address? greetings, britta

Hi! So I know this pattern was not recommended for beginners and now I see why. I’ve done a lined dress before so I understand the bottom but I’m A little confused about the top (how to connect the back piece to the front and bottom). Can anyone give me any pointers or direct me to a tutorial that might help? Thanks! I love this dress and don’t want to give up yet (though I might need to retreat back to easier patterns for a bit)!!
Thank you!

Hi Elaine,
I love your blog! So witty and you are definitely an inspiration to ‘get in the saddle’ again, i.e. behind the sewing machine.
At any rate, I was hoping you might give me a lead in regards to the Audrey dress you created. (Stunning!) I am six feet tall and the only part of my body approaching a size 32 is my chest. My body measurements are completely out of whack: 90 cm, 75 cm, 99 cm. Which means that I could never use the Audrey pattern that you posted on your blog. Did you base it off another pattern? Or did you draft it from scratch?
Thanks!
Megan

I Love your designs and I think that its great that you give us all the pattern for free!! I’m so jealous of your skill I wish I could make my own patterns!
I was thinking of making your dress for my prom (a. I love Audrey Hepburn’s style and b. I don’t want to spend loads of money on a dress I’ll wear once) but unfortunately I am not the same size as you. I have recently made quite a few dresses, but I have never had to adjust the sizing (I always buy patterns that fit me) I was hoping you could help me. I am a UK 10 (US 8).
Please help me

I just want to thank you so very much for the Audrey dress pattern. My 17 year old daughter wanted to dress like Audrey in that famous black dress for a homecoming event today at school (and for a parade.) I could not have done it without your pattern. I made some alterations because we were trying to make the dress look as much like Audrey’s as possible. I will post photos later after I am able to take some of her. My daughter is a size 0 like you, so the pattern was a perfect starting point.
Have a great day!
Thank you again!
