… clowns! Yep, we got a hint of them in this month’s issue of BurdaMag:

It turns out that this is no mere one-off clown sighting, but the beginnings of a full-blown clown fad! Check it out. I just wandered over to check out the “New Arrivals” section at Fabric Mart, and discovered this cheerful polka dot cotton:

With this awesome description:
This bright red with white polka dots is 100% cotton from Robert Kaufman. It is light to medium weight and has a smooth soft hand. Use it in quilting and decorating projects. Polka dots are perfect for the bow tie on all clown costumes.
That’s the main selling point they’re going with for this fabric. Perfect for clown costumes! ALL clown costumes, ladies. ALL. No matter which clown costume(s) you’re planning for your autumn wardrobe, the bow tie must be perfectly polka dotted. Don’t want to look like you’re wearing last year’s clown attire, after all.
Stay tuned for more cutting edge fashion updates. Aren’t you glad the Selfish Seamstress is helping you stay on top the trends? She’s nothing if not totally in touch. Forget beige and draping and whatever else you’ve been seeing on the runways- the new buzz is CLOWN and I’m hopping on this super tiny yet surprisingly crowded and raucous bandwagon. Off to look for some big shoes now…

thank god. it’s about time. now my incredibly tiny, yet astoundingly crowded vehicle will be fashionable instead of just, you know, Nouveau Poverty. I knew a clown car would be popular at some point. I’m fashion-forward like that.

“Off to look for some big shoes now…” Or as the rest of us call them, “regular shoes” ;)
(Did that come off as funny or mean? I certainly meant it as funny. I would love to have dainty feet.)

Selfish, it’s not that I don’t appreciate your good humor, intelligence and Burda News Flashes, but you are engaging in classic Avoidance Behavior. How is the Burda coat coming? Been There, Done That, but no Haiku readily available. Good luck with your fire drill.

I don’t follow :) I told you how the Burda coat is coming in my post this morning (almost done, should be finished today, but as I mentioned I’m not allowed to post pics of it) and I gave you a haiku yesterday… OMG WHAT MORE DO YOU PEOPLE WANT FROM ME???
Heheh, seriously, I’m not sure what you’re asking :)

Ew. Clowns scare me a little.. ok, a lot! Who on earth decided CLOWN is the new black?

Ooh! If clown is the new black, that means every woman needs a Little Clown Dress in her wardrobe! *shudder*

Oh ew. But on that note, I came back to share this one with you – clowns are vintage, too!

A while back you were looking for black and white stripe knit. I think? That was you, yes?
Anyway, going on the assumption that it was you…. there are some lovely new knits (cotton) by Michael Miller, some by Patty Young and some from there own inhouse fabric ranges.
And stripes. A black and white stripe. I was going to send you the link but I thought you might mind buying something called – “clown stripe”. But I see now I was just observing the start of the trend.
There is also a very nice seller of buttons on ebay that specialises in Clown buttons – they are really very nice (the 2 hole ones are much nicer than the 4 hold with the rim) and just the thing for your LCD. Isn’t that acryonym already taken!?
‘Here he comes, he’s Cathy’s clown’ – know anyone that might apply to?
Cheers,
AJ

But.. the Burda clown has a black bow tie. Fabric Mart must have looked at that picture and come to the conclusion there was a shortage in polka dot bow tie fabric.

When you look closely, you see that the bow tie is actually black with white polka dots.. Maybe it was the other way around? They looked at the picture, thought that Burda started a new trend and thought that there soon will be a shortage of polka dot fabric?!

Ah, I see what you mean, tiny little polka dots. They don’t stand out nearly as well as the red & white.

I want the pattern for that clown’s jacket. Do you have ANY IDEA how freaking hard it is to find a pattern for real tails?
I suppose I could just knock off his head, a la Red Queen, and steal the coat. That would also solve my problem.

would I be correct in the assumption that you have a low boredom threshold?

Clown costumes for all!

Sorry if this is boring, and already addressed in your blog, but what took you from not sewing, to that amazing black and white coat? Did you just suddenly want to sew, or did you have some great role models in the family?

Hahahahahahahahahaha! Snort! Clown costumes. Hee hee hee! Yikes. Seriously though, the biggest sales season for all the pattern companies is… Halloween. Sigh.

I was kind of liking that red polka dot, until you mentioned clowns – now you’ve put me right off!

YES, YOU CAN! For the redo maybe use nonstretchy fabric and lengthen it a bit (not too much, though). How about navy and cream white?

Oh dear. Clowns. My parents used to accuse me of wearing clown makeup in junior high when I was first permitted access to eyeshadow. I’m not ready to go back there.

Horrifying. Check out the look on Mr. Clown’s face. Looks mean and bossy. What are they thinking???

Do you know the Spanish movie “El Crimen Ferpecto”, from 2004? The woman in the film has a vision of clown fashion being the next trend and the film ends with a clown-inspired fashion show!

Oh dear. :/
Although, I did just buy a similar knit polka dot to make my friend’s not yet born baby daugter pajamas. Me thinks it will be a chic look on a 6mo. Maybe not on a grown adult….

Just ran across this and thought you should know that the trend is apparently spreading even farther than previously thought!

Polka dots are the latest thing in Europe. There is a wonderful fashion video series on The Guardian newspaper UK website and their latest piece in the style section on “How to Dress” said that all the fashion editors are showing up at meetings wearing polka dots.
